What happened in the Oxnard crash?

The collision was reported around 3:55 p.m. Friday at Doris and Victoria avenues in Oxnard, Ventura County.

At least two people were killed. Authorities declared both victims dead at the scene. Seven other people were injured, according to reporting from KABC/ABC7 and CBS News Los Angeles.

Ventura County Fire Department reported seven patients total. Two people died at the scene. Four people were transported to local hospitals:

  • One person suffered serious injuries.
  • One person suffered moderate injuries.
  • Two people suffered minor injuries.
  • One person refused transportation to a hospital.

Aerial footage showed as many as nine vehicles involved in the crash. A black pickup truck flipped onto a median. It landed on its side and on top of another crushed vehicle.

Two other vehicles were smashed into each other. A 55-mph speed limit sign and a light pole were also toppled. Debris and wreckage scattered across the roadway.

What did aerial footage show?

Air7 footage showed a large pickup truck lying on its side. The truck’s front end suffered heavy damage.

Another wrecked vehicle appeared pinned underneath the pickup. An SUV with substantial damage sat nearby. What appeared to be a car engine was visible beside the SUV.

The crash scene stretched across the intersection. Twisted metal, vehicle parts, and other debris covered the roadway.

CBS aerial footage also showed the black pickup on the median and on top of another crushed vehicle. The footage showed two other vehicles smashed together. It also showed the toppled speed-limit sign and light pole.

The damage shows how quickly a serious intersection crash can become a chain reaction. One impact can send vehicles into other lanes, medians, traffic equipment, and nearby drivers.

That danger increases when vehicles travel on a road with a posted speed limit of 55 mph. Drivers need enough time to recognize hazards, respond, and stop safely.

Which roads were closed after the crash?

Authorities shut down all lanes of Victoria Avenue between Gonzales Road and Teal Club Road.

The Oxnard Fire Department and Oxnard Police Department handled the emergency response. Crews worked to treat victims, remove wreckage, secure the roadway, and investigate what happened.

Officials have not released the cause of the collision. No additional details about the victims were immediately available.

This remains a developing story. The investigation may reveal additional facts about vehicle positions, traffic signals, speed, visibility, driver conduct, and other contributing conditions.

What road-safety lessons does this crash show?

A multi-vehicle collision can cause catastrophic harm in seconds. You protect yourself and others by following basic safety rules every time you drive.

Control your speed. California Vehicle Code § 22350 prohibits driving faster than reasonable or prudent. The rule applies even when a driver stays below the posted limit. Weather, traffic, visibility, road width, and surface conditions all matter.

Obey traffic signals. Never rush through an intersection. Watch for vehicles that may enter late or ignore a signal. Keep enough space to brake when cross traffic begins moving.

Respect the right of way. California Vehicle Code § 21801 requires a driver making a left or U-turn to yield to approaching vehicles that create a hazard. Section 21803 requires drivers facing yield signs to yield until they can proceed safely.

Stay focused. Put away your phone. Avoid distractions inside the vehicle. Never drive after consuming alcohol or drugs.

California recorded 4,061 traffic fatalities in 2023, according to the California Office of Traffic Safety. Alcohol-impaired fatalities accounted for 1,355 deaths that year. The state also reported 140 distracted-driving fatalities in 2021.

These numbers represent real families. They show why safe driving matters at every intersection in California.

What legal rights do injured victims have after a crash?

A serious crash creates medical bills, lost wages, vehicle damage, pain, and fear. You should not face insurance companies alone while you recover.

An injured victim may pursue compensation when another driver’s careless or reckless conduct caused the collision. A claim may seek payment for:

  • Emergency care and hospital bills.
  • Follow-up treatment and rehabilitation.
  • Lost income and reduced earning ability.
  • Vehicle and property damage.
  • Physical pain and emotional suffering.
  • Long-term care and future medical needs.

A multi-vehicle crash requires a detailed investigation. More than one driver may share responsibility. Evidence can include police reports, fire department records, medical records, traffic-camera footage, vehicle data, witness statements, photographs, and expert analysis.

Choosing a personal injury lawyer california families trust matters after a crash this severe. The right team moves fast, preserves evidence, and fights back when insurers try to minimize your losses.

How does California comparative fault work?

California follows pure comparative fault. The California Supreme Court adopted this rule in Li v. Yellow Cab Co. of California (1975) 13 Cal.3d 804.

Your recovery can be reduced by your percentage of fault. Your claim is not automatically eliminated because another party argues that you share some responsibility.

For example, a jury could find that another driver caused most of a collision while assigning a smaller percentage of fault to you. Your damages could then be reduced by your assigned percentage.

California Civil Code § 1432 addresses contribution between parties with a joint or joint-and-several obligation. In a crash involving multiple vehicles, contribution issues can become important when responsible parties dispute how much each party must pay.

We investigate every vehicle, driver, insurance policy, and piece of evidence. We fight to prevent insurers from shifting blame onto you.

Can a family file a wrongful death claim?

Yes. A family may have a wrongful death claim when another person’s wrongful act or neglect causes a death.

California Code of Civil Procedure § 377.60 identifies people who may bring a wrongful death action. Eligible parties can include a surviving spouse, domestic partner, children, certain dependent relatives, or the decedent’s personal representative.

A wrongful death claim can address financial and personal losses connected to the death. Those losses may include funeral expenses, lost financial support, loss of companionship, and the loss of household services.

The law does not erase your grief. It gives your family a legal path to demand accountability and financial support.

How long do you have to file a California accident claim?

California Code of Civil Procedure § 335.1 generally provides a two-year deadline for an action involving personal injury or death caused by another person’s wrongful act or neglect.

A different deadline applies when a public entity may be responsible. Under Government Code § 911.2, a claim for death or personal injury against a public entity generally must be presented within six months.

Missing a deadline can destroy an otherwise valid claim. Evidence also disappears quickly. Witness memories fade. Video systems overwrite recordings. Vehicles may be repaired or sold.

What should you do after a serious collision?

Step 1: Get emergency medical care. Follow your doctors’ instructions.

Step 2: Report the collision and obtain the incident information.

Step 3: Photograph your injuries, vehicle damage, roadway, traffic signals, and visible debris.

Step 4: Save medical bills, wage records, insurance letters, repair estimates, and prescriptions.

Step 5: Avoid giving a recorded statement before speaking with a lawyer.

Step 6: Contact an experienced California accident attorney immediately.
